SunRail Commuter Rail Kick-Off July 18, 2011


GEC is proud to be a member of the design team for SunRail, now beginning design of Phase II. GEC provided geotechnical engineering and contamination assessment for SunRail Phase I, which included a 31-mile alignment and 12 stations linking Debary to south Orlando. Phase II is comprised of an additional 30 miles of alignment with 5 additional stations, extending the rail system north to Deland and south to Poinciana. Rail service will begin in 2014 for Phase I and 2016 for Phase II.

Lake Nona Medical City

GEC provided the geotechnical engineering services for the Sanford/Burnham Medical Research Institute which opened its doors on October 8, 2009. The Burnham is the anchor tenant for the Lake Nona Medical City, located southeast of the Orlando International Airport. GEC provided construction materials testing services for the Medical City roadway infrastructure including Tavistock Boulevard, Weller Boulevard,Veterans Way, Nemours Parkway East  and West, and Exploration Way.In addition GEC provided both geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing for Osceola County’s Narcoossee Road widening, which will serve as the southern gateway to the Medical City.

GEC has provided engineering support services for transit, mobility and land development projects throughout Florida for the past 21 years. 

Currently, GEC is providing geotechncial engineering and environmental consulting services for the final design of SunRail commuter rail, Phases I and II from Deland to Poinciana. GEC is the Geotechnical Engineer of Record and Contamination Consultant for all 17 SunRail commuter rail stations.  GEC is primed to assist development teams with Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) efforts along the Sunrail corridor.

GEC services for TOD include geotechnical engineering, contamination assessment and construction materials testing for station structures, retail and mixed-use buildings, roadways, parking and stormwater management.

With offices in Orlando (since 1991) and Kissimmee (since 2003), GEC core services include subsurface investigations and borings, foundation design recommendations, hydrogeology and groundwater modeling, stormwater design, ground penetrating radar survey and construction materials testing services. GEC environmental consulting services include Phase I and Phase II contamination site assessments and screenings, as well as environmental drilling (direct-push).

GEC Land Development services include support for the DRI application process as well as site preparation including utilities, roadway and infrastructure master planning.

Representative GEC project assignments include Orlando’s planned Creative Village, a major 68-acre downtown Orlando redevelopment slated as the home for high-tech, digital media and creative industry companies and the continuation of design for the Wekiva Parkway for both the FDOT and the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority. Representative GEC design/build projects for FDOT include I-4 Widening at the St. Johns’ River, John Young Parkway Extension from Shader Road to SR 424 and the I-95/US 192 Interchange in Volusia County.

GEC benchmark structures experience include the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona, the Plaza Towers/Downtown Orlando, the OUC Reliance Plaza Headquarters, University of Central Florida  Performing Arts Center and UCF Arena, the Vue at Lake Eola, CNL Tower I, Embassy Suites Downtown Orlando Hotel and the Jacksonville Federal Courthouse Building.

 

GEC Wekiva Parkway Experience:

GEC staff has worked on the Wekiva Parkway for the past 7 years, starting with the OOCEA PD&E Study led by CH2MHill. Over the years, GEC has become intimately familiar with geotechnical conditions and contamination status along the alignment. We are currently providing geotechnical investigation and contamination assessment services for Wekiva Parkway Line and Grade Contract No. 1 led by HNTB for FDOT. GEC is also on the HNTB team for Wekiva Parkway Section 1A (SR 429-202), the first Wekiva Parkway section to be designed and constructed by OOCEA.
